Posedarje

Posedarje

At the foot of the Velebit mountain

The picturesque fisher's village Posedarje is located about 25 km northeast of the city of Zadar, at the foot of the Velebit mountain range on the western end of the Novigrad sea. The bay is connected with the Adriatic only by the narrow strait Novsko ždrilo and the Velebit channel. The mighty Velebit in the background offers an impressive panorama. The town, which counts 1400 inhabitants, was first mentioned in 1219 and can boast with a Romanesque style church. Another church is one built around 1700 in the then-dominant baroque style and now modernized parish church. On one of the town's three small islets there still is a small Gothic chapel from the 15th century.

However, as almost everywhere on the Croatian coast, it is the water that attracts the most visitors. Posedarje has a slipway where one can launch their boat to water for free. Holiday guests especially appreciate the water, which is usually quiet and pleasantly warm due to its sheltered position. For all the bathing fun, one can choose between a gravel or a sandy beach, both of which are surrounded by shade-giving pine trees. The gently sloping shores are very suitable for families with young children – there are neither jellyfish nor sea urchins!

The daily shopping can be done in one of the well-stocked and clean supermarkets. There are several butcher shops, bakeries, kiosks and a vegetable market, where freshly harvested fruits and vegetables as well as delicious, home-pressed olive oil is sold by very friendly market women every day. Whether its strawberries, cherries, peaches, melons, figs, lettuce, onions or potatoes – everything comes from their gardens. In the morning, on the small fish market, the local fishermen sell their catch fresh fish and delicious mussels. We especially recommend the local prosciutto, in the region known as Pršut, which is air-dried and smoked over local shrubs and woods. It counts as the regions delicacies. You can spend your evenings after a day at the beach in one of the cozy restaurants nearby, where they serve excellent wine and a wide range of local specialties.
